The Birth of a Design Classic
The Jieldé lamp was born out of the drive to improve. In 1951, Jean-Louis Domecq, a French mechanic, was constantly dealing with broken hinge lamps in his workshop. The wiring in these lamps was a recurring issue, limiting their flexibility and requiring frequent repairs. Over time, this became an ongoing nuisance, ultimately motivating Domecq to create something better.
Instead of settling for flawed designs, he took matters into his own hands. His solution was ingenious: a lamp with no internal wiring that could get twisted or damaged. Rather than relying on conventional cords, electrical current would pass through contact points inside the joints. This innovation allowed the lamp to rotate freely without tangled wires, solving one of the most common issues of traditional workshop lamps. Additionally, he developed interchangeable parts, making repairs and modifications simple, even for those without technical expertise.
