Identification Plate on the Lamp Shade: A Closer Look

The identification plate is always placed on the neck of the shade or globe. In earlier models, this plate was permanently riveted to the lamp. However, while these plates are often associated with the lamps, they are not always reliable for dating the fixture. So this can be a little confusing 🤔

The numbers on the plate were primarily used for internal purposes, such as assessing the productivity of workers or managing inventory. As such, they do not correlate to specific production periods or dates. These identifiers were part of a broader system aimed at operational efficiency rather than serving as chronological markers.

Typically, these lamps that were made for production enviroments were produced in batches and delivered directly to (initially in most cases) machinery manufacturers. This batch production explains the occurrence of blue and black labels, which, despite their color variations, are otherwise identical but signaled a different client.

Essential Information for Dating Your Vintage Jieldé Lamp

The most reliable method for determining the exact manufacturing date of your vintage Jieldé lamp begins with tracing the production date of the machine on which the lamp was originally used. 🤓☝️

However, this can often prove to be a challenging task, as Jieldé lamps were distributed not only throughout France but across the globe. 🌎

We recommend inquiring with the seller for these specific details, as they may provide valuable insight.

In addition to this, certain characteristics, such as the original paint color (green or gray), can offer helpful clues about the lamp's age and then we will discover the age of your vintage Jieldé Loft lamp 🕵🏻‍♀️

Furthermore, the design of the lamp's fitting plays an important role in identification.

For instance, the early models from the 1950s typically featured a short fitting with a ceramic collar, a distinctive feature of the first-generation lamps produced during this period.

A fact

The method of attaching the identification plate to a Jieldé lamp provides valuable insight into its age. Riveted plates, which are securely fastened with metal rivets, are characteristic of older models and reflect the craftsmanship of earlier production periods. In contrast, plates that are glued instead of riveted typically indicate a more modern manufacturing process.

Another key detail to look for is whether the plate is numbered. Numbered plates are often found on models produced after the year 2000, marking them as part of Jieldé’s more recent collections. These plates not only signify a newer production date but also highlight the brand's continued commitment to quality and authenticity.

What we encounter a lot

One of the key features that makes vintage Jieldé lamps so fascinating is their riveted identification plates. These plates not only authenticate the lamp but also serve as a visual timeline of its production. Among the original plates, three colors stand out as the most common: black, green, and blue.

Dating: late 1950s to 1980s

Rare

While most Jieldé lamps feature plates in standard black, blue, or green layouts, there are rare exceptions that add to their charm and mystique. For instance, some plates include additional details, such as the name of the company to which the lamp was originally delivered. A notable example is the inscription "British Central Electrical," which points to a specific client or distributor.

Even more intriguingly, there are cases where the green plate deviates from its usual design and adopts the layout style of the black or blue plates. These anomalies are a testament to the lamp's unique production history and make such pieces especially sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.

By closely examining the plate on your Jieldé lamp, you can uncover fascinating details about its past. Whether it's a rare inscription or an unusual layout, these small but significant differences can help you determine the age and provenance of your vintage treasure.

Aluminum Plates from the 1980s Onward

As Jieldé lamps evolved over the decades, so did their iconic identification plates. Starting in the 1980s, the brand began using aluminum plates that were glued onto the lamps, marking a shift from the earlier riveted designs. These aluminum plates became a hallmark of Jieldé’s later production era, offering a sleek and modern aesthetic while maintaining the brand's signature industrial charm.

Below, you’ll find examples of the most common aluminum plates used during this period. These designs reflect the practical yet stylish approach Jieldé adopted as it adapted to changing manufacturing techniques and design trends.

By examining these plates, you can gain a deeper understanding of how Jieldé’s designs evolved over time, helping you identify and appreciate the unique characteristics of your lamp.

Don’t Dismiss That Jieldé Lamp Too Quickly

There is more..

When browsing fairs or French brocantes, you might come across a Jieldé lamp that seems incomplete or missing key identifiers, such as an aluminum plate or rivet holes. However, don’t let this discourage you—such lamps can still be genuine!

For instance, we often receive WhatsApp messages from clients walking through these markets, wondering if the Jieldé lamps they’re considering are authentic. This is a common concern, as vintage lighting enthusiasts understandably want to ensure they’re investing in a true piece of industrial design history.

Therefore, our advice is to take your time and inspect the lamp carefully. Look for signs of quality craftsmanship, original joints, or unique details that align with Jieldé’s signature style. Even without a plate, the lamp could still be a legitimate find.

If you’re still uncertain, don’t hesitate to reach out to us with photos or questions. We’re always happy to help you navigate the buying process and make informed decisions. After all, discovering an authentic Jieldé lamp is part of the thrill, and we want to ensure you walk away with a piece that’s both genuine and worth restoring.

The History of Jieldé:

The Birth of an Iconic Lamp

In a small workshop owned by Jean-Louis Domecq, a skilled mechanic, the foundation was laid for what would become a design classic. The idea emerged from a personal need: Jean-Louis wanted to create "the perfect lamp" to make his work easier. After months of experimentation and refinements, the design was finalized in April 1950. The result was a lamp that was simple, robust, versatile, and capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of workshops and factories.

Success followed quickly. In 1951/52, Jean-Louis industrialized production to meet the growing demand. By 1953, he founded a company dedicated to marketing and distributing this groundbreaking lamp. The company name was inspired by his own initials: Jean-Louis Domecq, giving rise to the now-iconic brand name Jieldé.

Today, Jieldé continues to produce its legendary lamps with the same dedication to quality and craftsmanship. From its headquarters in Saint-Priest, near Lyon, the company blends its industrial heritage with contemporary design to create lamps that are as functional as they are timeless.
