Gijs Buis Homepage Blog September 27, 2025 ANVIA: A Legacy ANVIA is more than just a brand; it is a story of resilience, innovation, and timeless design. From its origins in Berlin in 1906 to its rebirth in the Netherlands in 2015, ANVIA carries a rich history woven with creativity, craftsmanship, and a lasting influence on the design world. This blog dives deep into the fascinating story behind ANVIA, the iconic designs of Jan Hoogervorst, and the revival of a legendary name in lighting. Historical Background Max Liebert’s Vision and ResilienceThe story of ANVIA begins in Berlin, where Max Liebert took over a decoration business from Lessmann Moset in 1906. Over nearly three decades, Liebert turned the company into a successful enterprise with three factories specializing in decoration and lighting. His vision and expertise made him a key figure in the industry. However, the political landscape shifted dramatically in 1933 when the Nazi regime seized two of Liebert’s companies. Faced with this adversity, Max relocated his remaining factory to Almelo in the Netherlands, where he established Algemeene Nederlandsche Verlichtings-Industrie Almelo (ANVIA). Together with his family, Max rebuilt the business, focusing on high-quality lighting and functional design.Tragedy struck again during World War II. In 1943, Max, Käte, and Werner were arrested and murdered in Sobibor and Auschwitz. Despite the devastating loss, Ilse Liebert and her husband Fritz Kaufmann survived by going into hiding. After the war, they were urged by ANVIA’s employees to rebuild the company. Through sheer determination, they revived ANVIA, overcoming shortages in raw materials and the challenges of post-war reconstruction. Jan Hoogervorst The Designer Behind ANVIA’s Iconic LampsIn the 1950s, ANVIA entered a golden era of design thanks to its collaboration with industrial designer Jan (J.J.M.) Hoogervorst. Born on April 14, 1918, in Alkmaar, Hoogervorst was a versatile and talented designer whose work elevated ANVIA to international recognition.Hoogervorst was not directly employed by ANVIA but worked through his own design studio, Interdesign, creating annual collections for the company. His early designs were heavily inspired by Italian lighting pioneers such as Arredoluce, Stilnovo, and Arteluce. This earned him the nickname “Dutch crown prince of Italian design,” a nod to the influence of Gino Sarfatti. Some of Hoogervorst’s most iconic designs include:Wall lamp 7013Desk lamp 6019Floor lamp 8025Wall lamp 7058 (Paperclip)Counterbalance lamps, including the popular model 5018These lamps are not only functional but timeless and elegant, making them highly sought-after collector’s items today. His light boxes and even the waste bins at Schiphol are still in use today. Design and Style What Makes ANVIA TimelessANVIA’s lamps are celebrated for their timeless design principles, blending functionality with elegance. Hoogervorst’s approach to design emphasized simplicity, purity, and practicality, qualities that resonate with modern-day design enthusiasts. His ability to create lighting that feels both contemporary and classic is what sets ANVIA apart. The clean lines, innovative use of materials, and focus on user functionality make these lamps timeless pieces of art. Comparing Hoogervorst’s work to other mid-century designers such as Gino Sarfatti highlights his ability to bring international influences into Dutch design while maintaining his unique vision. By the mid-1980s, ANVIA was sold to a Dutch window decoration company, and the brand eventually disappeared from the market. For nearly 30 years, ANVIA remained dormant, its legacy preserved only in the memories of design enthusiasts and collectors. The Revival of ANVIA In the summer of 2014, the idea to revive ANVIA took shape. What followed was an inspiring journey to uncover the extraordinary history of the brand. On January 5, 2015, ANVIA was officially reestablished, bringing its timeless designs back to life.Today, ANVIA produces retro design lamps that remain true to the principles of timeless functionality and elegance.
